Farnsworth

2014 // Judson University, Prof. Jeremy Lindsey
The task of creating an addition to Mies van der Rohe's iconic Farnsworth House in Plano, Illinois is a challenging one. This project seeks to integrate a new residence, art studio, and gallery space into the existing site without disturbing the historic landmark.

This design uses a similar tectonic language as the Farnsworth House but with greater emphasis on the juxtaposition of mass and lightness. The key point of the addition is a deteriorating screen, which optically blends with nature. When viewed from the porch of the original home the glass art gallery space of the new building floats alone, separate from the functional program of the building. This allows the art to connect with the art of the Farnsworth House.
